2015 Italy Photography Workshops Announced

I’m excited to announce my 2015 Italy Photography Workshops!

I’ll be doing three separate workshops next summer:

I have scheduled them back-to-back so you can combine two or even all three for a great summer of Italian photography and culture. Each workshop is limited to 7 participants, so you get lots of personal instructional time. And, since my goal is to have you devote your time to making photographs and immersing yourself in Italian culture, I take care of all the details; all you have to do is arrive in Italy, photograph and learn.

For a sense of what my workshops are like, watch this short video. To see what former workshop students have said about their experience in Italy with me, see this web page.

Countless writers, artists and poets have tried to capture the essence of a city that Italians call “La Serrinissima” – the most serene one. It’s a city of water and stone but also a city of tremendous atmosphere and theatrical drama. Once one of the richest and most powerful republics in all of Europe, Venice is now one of the most well-preserved historic cities in the world. It’s made up of 118 islands connected by footbridges and riddled with winding canals, creating a place that has an amazing quality of light and presence that is all its own.

Photographically, our objective will be to capture both the dream that is Venice and the everyday life of Venetians in their water bound world. Our time will be divided between the theatrical riot that is the central part of the city – San Marco, the quieter and less touristed “sestieri” or neighborhoods like the Dorso Duro and San Polo.

One day will be spent exploring the placid solitude of the Venetian lagoon and its outlying islands, visiting a church with stunning golden mosaics on the sparsely-populated island of Torcello, the candy-colored houses and lace-makers of Burano and perhaps even stopping to watch the glass blowers work their magic in Murano.

Of course, we will also make time to look at and contemplate the images we make, with critique, guidance and advice as I gently push you to create richer, more complete photographs.

Participants will meet up in Venice, where we’ll work from our home base, a delightful and centrally located hotel not far from Piazza San Marco. From there, we will work on photographing the essence of a city that is made up of light, air, water, stone and drama. Expert guides will help us learn about the nuances of this once-powerful city and the art, architecture and grandeur that its influence helped buy. I will work with you to help you develop your own response to this astonishing and magical city.
