Piazza della Rotunda, Rome

“If Rome were a meal, or a book, or a woman, or a wrinkled, wise and ancient face, it would be the only face worth studying, the only woman worth loving, the only book worth reading, the only meal worth eating. You must go and go and go again.” –Anon.

Rome is an astonishing city… Crowded, noisy, bustling, gorgeous, and just generally fabulous. The Romans say, Rome…Una vita non basta….a lifetime is not enough. If you’ve been there, you know it’s true, and if you’ve not been there….get ready!  Rome offers endless photographic opportunities around every bend, among them are ancient ruins, riotously colorful open markets, light-filled piazzas that come out of nowhere where Romans their everyday lives, churches reflective of so many eras—Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococco—majestic fountains, and so much more.

It is a city with a story, or rather with millennia of stories, and through photography, we will concentrate on learning to tell a story of Rome  – your story of Rome – with images. In the field, we’ll spend time trying to find unique ways of seeing iconic sights as well as finding subject matter that is well off the beaten track. Back at the hotel, we will edit your take, working on shot selection, sequence and series to help you tell your own story of Rome. We will work with digital photographic equipment for its remarkable speed of feedback and response, combining daily photographic experiences with periodic real-time editing and critiquing of images.

We’ll be based in the centro storico, the historical center.  Our accommodations at the Albergo Cesári are ideally located between the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain; it’s a “walk to” location for so many sites (including Giolitti, one of Rome’s premier gelaterie) you’ll want to photograph.  The hotel also has a great rooftop terrace where you can relax in the evening.

A Tuscan Sunflower

Enjoy a photographic journey where you will experience many aspects of Tuscany’s remarkable culture, landscape and hill towns and work towards a personal photographic response to the Tuscan sense of place. We will work with digital photographic equipment for its remarkable speed of feedback and response, combining daily photographic experiences with periodic real-time editing and critiquing of images.

Pienza (pop. 2300) is a most charming village with its perfect Renaissance town center reconstructed at the direction of its most famous resident, Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who became Pope Pius II in 1458.  Piazza Pio (Pius) illustrates his concept of the balance between church and state, and religious and civic buildings sit side by side in architectural harmony.  We’ll be based at the lovely Il Chiostro di Pienza, right in the heart of this town.   It’s an ideal combination of an in-town location with a countryside feel—there is a lovely terraced area in the back with unspoiled views on the Val d’Orcia, complete with a pool.

Working from our base, we will fan out across the Tuscan landscape and explore hill towns, markets, vineyards and the remarkable architecture of the region. By immersing ourselves in the culture, we will get to know the people, food and wine of the region. Jeff will push you to go beyond the picturesque and help you discover your own response to the texture, rhythm and spirit of Tuscany.

Great Italian Language app for your iPhone!

In preparation for my latest trip to Italy, I just downloaded a wonderful, simple and effective Italian language app for my iPhone. Byki Italian by Transparent Language, Inc. is a great app and very effective at helping me not only review the Italian I already know, but learn new Italian words, phrases and grammar as well. Byki Italian uses a great “flash-card” metaphor for picture-2helping you learn. Presenting you first with both the English and Italian words and then with just the Italian word (and you supply the English translation) and then the English word (where you then supply the Italian word) it takes you through the process of repeating the words until you know them. Then, you get a quiz to make sure that you know the words that you have learned.

You can choose various segments like food, transportation, hotels, finding a bathroom, etc. It’s a great app and well worth the $7.99.

Check it out at the iTunes store!
